RHD hosts Mayor’s Task Force to Combat Opioid Epidemic

RHD hosted the Mayor’s Task Force to Combat the Opioid Epidemic for a community listening session. Concerned citizens joined us to help create a plan to address the heroin and opioid epidemic in Philadelphia. RHD has been a leader in fighting opioid addiction since 1972, and specializes in creating and providing trauma-informed, person-centered services that work in any community setting. Since 1999, the rate of overdose deaths involving opioids — including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin — has quadrupled, and last year more people died from opioid overdoses than in any year on record. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, opioid abuse results in $55 billion in health and social costs each year.

At RHD, we know people need more than a referral. RHD’s continuum of care focuses on access to treatment, including “warm handoffs” to keep people from falling through the cracks, and stable housing that removes barriers to recovery. RHD’s philosophy of care coordination meets the needs of program participants in a recovery-oriented environment dedicated to healing, wellness and choice.

RHD’s Montgomery County Recovery Center (MCRC), which provides Medication Assisted Treatment to people with opioid-related substance use disorder, was named a Center of Excellence by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and the Department of Human Services. MCRC supports more than 350 individuals each day, with an experienced team that provides treatment in conjunction with counseling and supportive services. After successfully accessing services, 92 percent of MCRC participants are free from using opioids.
