Finding Strength and Purpose: Ouida’s Journey at RHD’s H.E.A.R.T. Services
November 1, 2024
At RHD, we proudly support individuals on their paths to recovery and personal growth. Ouida’s story shows how resilience, patience, and the right support system can change lives.
Ouida has bachelor’s and master’s degrees and experience as a case manager in behavioral health. But personal struggles and mental health challenges disrupted her career. After seeking help, she joined RHD’s H.E.A.R.T. Services in Philadelphia, a program that supports people with mental health diagnoses and medical conditions as they work toward independent living.
Ouida was eager to return to work, but she faced many rejections after applying for jobs and going through interviews. At times, her resilience faltered, leading her to cope in unhealthy ways, such as skipping medications and leaving the program. But she never gave up. With support from Residential Manager Rhonda Williams and the H.E.A.R.T. staff, Ouida slowly but surely regained her footing.
A Turning Point
Rhonda encouraged Ouida to start volunteering to ease back into a work setting. Through Rhonda’s connections, Ouida began volunteering twice a week at St. John’s Hospice, which serves the homeless in Philadelphia. It wasn’t an easy choice, but Ouida took that first step. Volunteering helped her rediscover her sense of purpose and confidence. She is looking forward to rejoining the workforce with renewed strength and self-esteem. “With the support I get from H.E.A.R.T. Services, I’m in a better place to think, reflect, and work without the stress of negative influences,” she says. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have that space and support as I move forward.”
