Empowering Independence: Christopher Reyes’ Journey with RHD Shining Through

Christopher Reyes has a passion for all things SEPTA. In Philadelphia, where he resides in a newly renovated home supported by RHD Shining Through, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transport Authority provides public transportation in the city and surrounding suburbs. Christopher enjoys riding SEPTA trolleys and buses, watching SEPTA-related videos, and above all, talking about SEPTA. While giving a room tour, Christopher displayed his extensive collection of model trains, buses, and trolleys cars, spanning decades, and numerous SEPTA schedules dating back to 2021. His favorite vehicle is the trolley.

Previously, Christopher was living with his mother’s family. In 2015, his family’s dedication to finding the right support program led them to RHD and Shining Through, where Christopher found the help he needed. This transition was more than just a change in residence; it was the start of a new chapter in his life, filled with independence and personal growth. Now, Christopher is living his best life at an RHD Shining Through home in Northeast Philadelphia. Direct Service Professions Diana Allende and Rhonda Brown provide round-the-clock support to ensure that he thrives and can enjoy his favorite activities. Christopher has acquired invaluable life skills; learning to cook is a standout accomplishment. With assistance from staff, he has mastered essential household tasks, from making coffee and dinner to doing laundry and sweeping. These skills have not only increased his independence but also empowered him in his daily life, a testament to the success of the RHD Shining Through staff.

RHD Shining Through provides a secure and caring environment to adults diagnosed with behavioral health challenges and intellectual and developmental disabilities living in Philadelphia’s Northeast, Germantown, and Southwest sections of the city. The program promotes independence and fosters the development of vocational and social supports. Individuals receive care in an environment that inspires growth and continued progress. RHD Shining Through provides services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Christopher’s outlook on life is profoundly influenced by his experiences at RHD. He values the support and encouragement from Diana, Rhonda, other staff members, and friendly neighbors. The community’s kindness and dedication have played a crucial role in shaping his positive perspective.
